Real Food

Happy New Year! Tis the time when many are making resolutions for the year ahead and more often than not eating healthy (or more healthy) falls somewhere on the list. Well, this year, after reading Nina Planck’s book Real Food: What to Eat and Why, I intend to consume more whole milk and butter in 2013. What’s that, you ask? That sounds fattening! According to the book, these are essential elements of a healthy diet backed up both by anecdotes and science. I’m also adding more fish to my diet and will continue to eat local meats raised on grass along with other traditional (in other words grown from seed in soil without pesticides and chemicals) fruits and vegetables (the latter mostly grown by hand in my backyard). The book argues against industrial, processed foods, including margarine, soy protein, and beef and chicken fattened on grains. I enjoy her stories and the data she uses to back up her claims. Highly recommended for those interested in un-learning all the crap that marketing peeps throw at us in the grocery store through labels and packaging.
