recently we upgraded our worm bin to a tiered system, sometimes referred to as a flow through system. we started based on these plans, but modified to what we had…..worms are not all that picky. i’d like to modify it with a drain to easily get the “tea” from the bottom bin. here’s how we […]

this year we are planting strawberries! since we didn’t have any topsoil, we used a mixture of compost and sand, neither of which hold water very well…..so only half of the plants seem to be doing okay. will post first strawberry when we get there!
we have invested in a new tool called the wall-o-water which comes in a handy 3-pack, but i have read you can make your own out of 2 L soda bottles (check here). the wall-o-water is 2 sheets of plastic that are sealed together and can be filled with water. the water in the plastic […]
dear reader, remember how we said we got an early start on the planting season? well, we now have 36 tomatoes and 27 peppers growing beyond our rudimentary seed sprouting set up in the basement! what to do? please help…it’s too cold to put them outside!
ok, so i really don’t know what experiment number this is, but here’s details on another try at the homestead…..quasi cold frame: we used one of our tomato bins, mixed in some worm casting from the vermicompost, and planted some arugula, lettuce, and spinach. we watered them and then covered the whole shebang with an […]
well, it’s snowing again….big charlie brown kind of flakes! but we have tomatoes, peppers and parsely going strong in the basement. we are still ahead of schedule, but that’s okay.
inspired by a recent 40 degree day, we decided to plant some seeds indoors today. last year, we feel we got off to a late start, so we are certainly reversing that trend by planting today! in fact, according to others we are about 2 months ahead of schedule on planting our tomatoes and peppers […]
2008 has come and gone….while on vacation our lettuce started to come up. the bin in the middle contains spinach (in the front…which you can barely see since its true leaves are just sprouting) and the final bin didn’t germinate that well, but the rest looks quite promising!
another season, another experiment….we’re trying to grow lettuce through the winter….in our basement! will let you know if they mature or if we just get micro greens. we already have arugula coming up….yummy!
below are some pictures of this past season at baybranch….enjoy!
